Darling Dales

Jaw droppingly stunning landscapes, dry stone walls and cosy Inns galore all contribute to the exquisite charm of the Dales. If you're into walking then you probably know this place anyway. If you don't you are in for such a treat.

There is a Dale to suit every mood, from the gentle charms of the southern Dales to the wild magnificence of the north. Don't worry if the mere mention of hiking brings you out in a rash, there are lots of other fun things to do here. Fly a hot air balloon, nibble on some Wensleydale, develop a taste for Black Sheep ale; this is the Dales darling!

Tell me more...

The Yorkshire Dales cover a huge area of land across northern England; starting just above Leeds stretching right up towards the Pennines to the north, they occupy most of the central belt between York on the East and the Lake District to the West. Made up of a patchwork of individually named Dales, most of the area is protected by National Park status, helping to preserve its unique beauty from the throng of tourists and walkers drawn here every year.

Providing the backdrop to much of the UK's favourite TV and film, including The Calendar Girls and All Creatures Great and Small, much of the scenery has a nostalgic and familiar feel.  Part of the enduring appeal here is the surprisingly varied landscape; you'll find lush green valleys, meandering meadows, dramatic moorlands, magnificent mountains, rocky crags and exquisite wilderness - all peppered with charming vilages and cosy inns welcoming you back to civilisation. The sheer size of the Dales means it's impossible to experience all it has to offer on a short timescale; much better to focus your attention on one or two of the regions that really appeal. Our mini guide to the Darling Dales details what to expect in each as well as the low down on must see villages and towns.
