Darling Dales, Fun and Games

Only 16 years old, this brewery’s origins lie in the fiercely independent spirit of a Yorkshire man, Paul Theakston. Determined not to be engulfed by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries in a dispute rumbling on from the 1970s, his labour of love to transform a derelict old building on the banks of the Ure into a traditional country brewery is a real antidote to the culture of mass production. Tours of the Black Sheep Brewery are available most days and some evenings.

With around 15 meets from April to early September, ‘Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse’ makes for an excellent day’s entertainment. The charm of this course comes from its smaller proportions – you are always close the action pre and post racing. It also has a distinct atmosphere harking back to a bygone era - traditional tea-rooms and bandstands sit alongside the champagne bar.
