Middlethorpe Hall and Spa

GW thinks...

Built in 1699, this grand William and Mary country house hotel in York was once owned by the famous diarist Lady Mary Wortley Montagu... It’s now managed and run by the National Trust.  All mellow red brick, majestic windows and manicured lawns, it has been lovingly restored to its original best using exacting historical records.  Decorated with impeccable 18th Century style, the elegant decor, antiques and fine paintings creates the impressive ambience of a private manor house...

Set in 20 acres of grounds overlooking York racecourse, the location and setting is pretty much perfect.  After an indulgent lunch on the terrace, take a turn around the delightful rose beds, walled garden or romantic meadow leading down to the lake and breathe in some of the glamour of 18th Century aristocratic life.  If you fancy some 21st Century distraction, York city centre’s designer boutiques and lively bars await.

The hotel also has an on-site Spa with pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, gym and sauna as well as a club room.   Housed subtly in a pair of Edwardian cottages, the Spa offers a range of treatments using Decleor, ESPA and St Tropez products amongst others, as well as some rather indulgent pampering packages.

Dress for dinner...

Dining at Middlethorpe Hall Hotel & Spa is an elegant affair; the candlelit panelled dining rooms overlook the hotel grounds and continue the theme of well-tended grandeur.  Private dining can also be arranged within smaller, more intimate rooms. The food here is fantastic with an excellent luncheon and dinner menu accompanied by an equally well judged wine list.

If you prefer something a little lighter, the quintessentially English tradition of Afternoon Tea has become something of an institution at Middlethorpe Hotel.  Served in the opulent Drawing room facing the south lawn, it includes tea from the famous Taylors of Harrogate as well as the diet-defying sandwiches, scones and cakes...

Time for bed...

Ths country house hotel in York has several types of rooms in different locations, each one individually decorated and unique.

The Courtyard rooms are housed in the Coach House adjacent to the main hall.  Overlooking the formal gardens or quiet courtyard, they provide a peaceful and romantic option.  Standard and superior rooms are accompanied by four sumptuous suites, providing large separate living areas and bathrooms.

The Main House rooms and suites are found on the first and second floors of the main building and are characterised by high ceilings and huge windows.  They include the hotel’s flagship room, the Duke of York Suite.  Overlooking the beech avenue, this grand apartment is adorned with antiques and paintings from the William and Mary period and has a large living room with open fire.

The three Cottage and Garden suites are tucked away down a country lane around 75 yards from the hotel.  Decked out in comfortable old-school English style, they offer a charming alternative to the main rooms.  The Garden suite boasts its own terrace garden and pond, and the two Cottage suites can interconnect to welcome an entire family.
