Gisborough Hall
GW thinks...
Dating from the middle of the 19th Century, Gisborough Hall is an architectural delight. From the first glimpse of the elegant Victorian facade from the grand driveway, you know you’re in for something special. Although the house has been a hotel for several years it’s still privately owned by Lord and Lady Gisborough, so there is a real sense of the family’s history here. With family crests, treasured antiques and fine English oil paintings adorning the walls, staying here feels more like you’ve been invited to make use of a wealthy relative’s country pad.
The interior of this luxury country house hotel has enjoyed a careful make-over in recent years, with the traditionally themed decor and furnishings combining to create a stylish but old school ambience. Large drawing rooms are lit by huge roaring fires and filled with sumptuous sofas – perfect to sink into for a spot of afternoon tea or a pre-dinner cocktail.
Looking out over the Cleveland Hills and Guisborough forest, this grand country house hotel provides a real retreat from a hectic urban lifestyle. There are lots of peaceful walks available from the hotel doorstep, and being pitched on the edge of the North York Moors, you have immediate access to this stunning landscape. Gisborough Hall is also only around twenty minutes drive from Whitby and the North Yorkshire coast.
The hotel can arrange for a number of activities on and near the grounds, ranging from 4x4 driving to clay pigeon shooting – just ask the GW concierge for more info. If you fancy something a little less energetic, the Revival Zone Spa has lots of indulgent treatments and pamper packages waiting for you...
Dress for dinner...
You have a choice of dining options in the hotel; in the relaxed library bar, on the terrace enjoying the fantastic view over the Cleveland Hills, or in the opulent, award-winning Tockett’s restaurant. An impressive menu features organic produce cooked creatively, with the focus on locally produced meat and fish.
Light snacks and a brassiere-style menu is also available in the Drawing Room and Main Hall.
Time for bed...
There are 19 rooms and suites in the hotel’s old quarters, each one designed to enhance the room’s original features. All have been named individually and follow their own unique theme, like the grand Lady Gisborough, Fountain Suite and The Old Nursery.
For the romantics there are four posters available in three of the rooms and a huge claw-foot tub set in the window recess of Miss Bruce’s room.
