Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa

GW thinks...

The Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa is one of those luxury Yorkshire hotels that once discovered, you know you will go back to time and time again.  Nestled on the edge of the North York Moors in the picture postcard town of Helmsley, the Feversham Arms is also close to Whitby and the delights of the North Yorkshire coast.  A contemporary twist on the traditional country retreat, it has been subject to a lavish refurb in 2008 which saw the introduction of the hotel’s fabulous Spa.  This is rural boutique accommodation at its stylish best.

Having welcomed guests for over a century and a half, the hotel has managed to maintain its traditional Yorkshire charm.  The exterior is all honey coloured sandstone with soft accents of cream and sage, giving way to an effortlessly classic interior.  Think plush comfy sofas, roaring fires and flagstone floors all set against a designer palette.

The hotel’s centrepiece is a glamorous heated swimming pool which feels positively decadent within this North Yorkshire backdrop.  The recently opened Spa is housed in a separate building accessed via a glass link bridge from the hotel.  Listed as one of the top 101 Spas in the world by Tatler in 2009, the treatments and facilities here are amazing.  Like the hotel, the ambience inside the Spa is all about un-intimidating luxury, with a comfortable country theme running throughout.  Indoors you’ll find steam rooms, a tropical shower, a foot spa and sauna as well as a smart brassiere bar.  The delightful relaxation room is well stocked with glossy magazines and looks out onto the gorgeous Spa garden outside.  Designed by Royal Horticultural Society’s Matthew Wilson, this south-facing slice of paradise features a large hot tub on teak decking with perfectly pitched borders of lavender, geranium and of course verbena.

Dress for dinner...

Locally and nationally renowned, the food in this luxury Yorkshire hotel is superb.  With a choice of 3 menus including an innovative tasting menu, you can dine in the conservatory-style restaurant, the lounge or sit by the pool if the weather is decent.

It’s all about hearty food rooted in the local landscape; the hotel chefs make good use of game and produce from the surrounding estates, with mains like the pan roast sirloin of Yorkshire beef and slow cooked Yorkshire pork belly.  A wicked list of puddings and tempting cheese board all serve to undo a rosy cheeked day’s walking across the Moors.  You’ll also find an extensive wine list and knowledgeable sommelier on hand to help choose the perfect bottle.

As an indulgent treat, breakfast at the Feversham Arms is traditionally served to your room, with every bedroom featuring its own breakfast table, although guests are equally welcome in the restaurant every morning.

Time for bed...

The bedrooms here are more than a little bit special.  Starting with the small but perfectly formed petite doubles, up to the exquisite Poolside and Spa suites, all are designed to feel smart but ultimately relaxing.  Muted, contemporary tones with stronger accents of reds and greens are cleverly combined with elegant furnishings and luxurious fabrics to create an undeniably English country-chic feel.  All of the bedrooms within the hotel offer something different...

The Classic & Junior suites were the original suites in the hotel and as such are very popular.  All feature sitting rooms or areas separate to the bedroom. Several have roll-top baths and one has a gorgeous working fireplace.

The Poolside and Garden suites all feature huge beds, bathrooms with walk-in showers, a double-ended bath and a separate sitting room.  Most have direct access to the pool with a private outdoor terrace and some include a cosy wood burning stove.

The Spa suites are the newest edition to the bedroom line up; all are situated on the first floor with south-facing views over the pool garden.  Spacious and luxurious, all have large beds, enormous double-ended tubs, walk-in showers, balconies and a separate sitting room.

Just choose the room that suits when you book.
