The Churchill

GW thinks...

Built in the early 1800s, The Churchill luxury hotel in York has been an elegant landmark for almost two centuries. Recently treated to a stylish make-over, the beautiful interior maintains a sense of old fashioned grandeur. At the heart of the building a stunning atrium houses the grand staircase, where walls adorned with memorabilia of the hotel’s indomitable namesake provide a suitably austere backdrop.

Pitched just outside the city walls within its own grounds, the hotel stands on what was the main Roman approach to York. A few minute’s stroll takes you under the historic Bootham Bar Roman gateway, with the York Minster and city centre shops just beyond.

The Churchill has the best of both worlds; all the mod cons you would expect from a city centre hotel but with the intimacy, glamour and personal service of an old country house...the perfect partner to this stunning city.

Dress for dinner...

The Churchill isn't just one of the best luxury hotels York has to offer.  It's restaurant is also worth shouting about.  The fact that it has just received it's second AA Rosette is testament to the quality of food here.  The hotel’s Piano Bar and Restaurant overlooks the front lawn through majestic arched windows. Both the bar and the restaurant have a cosy relaxed vibe, with soft lighting and the tinkle of a baby grand piano in the background. You can also dine al fresco on the hotel’s terrace in the warmer months. The food here has a good reputation and the menu is a delight of well prepared local produce.

Time for bed...

The smart design in the hotel’s communal spaces is continued upstairs where every bedroom has been kitted out in this chic fashion. With strong lines and bold colours, the timeless but contemporary feel is perfectly complemented by unexpected design classics; Bestlite lamps light the rooms as they would have Churchill’s desk during the war. Crisp white linen, LCD TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi access are standard throughout.

For a truly sumptuous stay, the hotel’s executive rooms and suites feature four posters, free standing baths, walk in shower rooms and bespoke furniture.

Cream of the crop is the stunning Prince of Wales suite, so named after the then Prince of Wales, HRH King Edward VII, who stayed in this very room in 1898. Think high ceilings, a magnificent bay window, a huge free standing copper bath, a bed big enough to get lost in and gorgeous furniture throughout...absolute heaven!
